What counts as a subscription
A subscription is any charge that comes back on a schedule — streaming and music, cloud storage, news and apps, the gym, a meal-kit, software you pay for monthly or yearly. If it bills again without you doing anything, it belongs on this list.
The ones people miss are almost always the annual charges: they only appear once a year, so they never feel like a “monthly” cost — even though, spread out, they often add up to more than the obvious monthly ones.
How this fits into your recurring money
A subscription isn't a one-time purchase you can forget — it's a standing claim on next month's money, and the month after that. The single monthly number above is the part of your income that's already spoken for before you spend a cent on anything else.
That's the whole idea behind Recurrings: everything that comes back should be tracked in one place, watched for price increases, and flagged before it renews — not rediscovered on a statement after you've already paid.
The math
monthly total = Σ ( price × times billed per year ) ÷ 12 annual total = monthly total × 12
Every subscription is converted to a monthly equivalent first, so a weekly, quarterly, or yearly charge can be compared fairly against a monthly one. A $120/year plan counts as $10/month; a $30/quarter plan also counts as $10/month.
The annual figure is simply the monthly total times twelve — the same money, shown at the scale that usually makes the size of it land.
Common questions
How do I find all my subscriptions?
Check your last three bank and card statements for repeating charges, look in the App Store and Google Play subscription settings, and search your email for words like “receipt,” “renewal,” and “your plan.” The annual ones are the easiest to forget.
Is monthly or annual billing cheaper?
Annual plans are usually 10–20% cheaper per month, but you pay the whole year up front and it's easier to forget to cancel. This calculator shows both so you can compare the real yearly cost either way.
How much does the average person spend on subscriptions?
Most people underestimate by a wide margin — surveys consistently find the average household pays for far more recurring services than they can list from memory. Adding yours up here is usually a surprise.
