Spread out, and easy to underestimate

The cost of a pet hides in plain sight: a bag of food here, an annual vet visit there, grooming every few months, insurance every month. None of it feels big on its own. List it all at its real cadence and the true monthly and yearly cost finally sits in one place.

This is the recurring cost of ownership — the upfront price and the surprise emergencies sit on top, which is exactly why a small cushion for your pet is worth keeping.

How this fits into your recurring money

A pet is a bundle of small recurring commitments — food, insurance, vet, grooming — each easy to ignore alone, meaningful together. They're no different from any other recurring money: better understood in one place than scattered across receipts.

That's what Recurrings does — it pulls every recurring charge, including the pet ones, into a single honest picture, so the real monthly cost is never a surprise on the statement.

The math

monthly total = Σ ( cost × times billed per year ) ÷ 12
annual total = monthly total × 12

Each cost is normalized to a monthly equivalent so the yearly vet bill and the monthly food sit on the same scale — a $180/year check-up counts as $15/month. The annual total is twelve times the monthly figure.

Common questions

What should I include?

Everything that recurs: food, treats, pet insurance, routine vet visits, flea and worm treatment, grooming, litter or bedding, and any pet subscriptions. Enter each at its real cadence — the yearly vet check counts too.

Why does the total surprise people?

Because pet costs are spread across the week, the month, and the year, so they're never seen together. Food feels small; the annual vet bill feels rare. Added up, the monthly figure is usually a lot higher than expected.

Does this include one-off costs?

No — this is the recurring cost of ownership. The upfront price, and surprise emergencies, sit on top, which is exactly why an emergency cushion for a pet is worth planning.

The little costs that add up
